Yeah its a late 70s Russian cartoon, directed and animated by Yuri Norstein. Its called Hedgehog in the Fog. Also highly recommended is Tale of Tales by the same guy.
I personally know of very few other animation directors who are capable of communicating mood so clearly and powerfully on screen. I love all of his films, but especially the two already mentioned; well worth checking out!

Hey Mike - good to hear from you buddy! Just saw your blog; love the little communist dunnys! though the Michael Jackson one kinda freaked me out... :)

Julian hi - thanks for stopping by. I accidentally found out about your blog a couple of months ago, through Audrey Kawasaki’s blog. I must say that I absolutely LOVE your drawings! It’s very inspiring to see work so free and uninhibited. Working in the commercial arts (I am a designer in animation) can sometimes prove to be quite frustrating; dealing daily with how impersonal most people treat the practice of drawing (and painting) is not fun at all… So seeing work that is honest, personal and well crafted is quite a treat - thanks for sharing and keep up the good work – always love seeing new stuff!

Cheers,
Andrew.
